A thousand connected lakes you can cross for days without a licence.

The Mecklenburg Lake District is the largest connected network of lakes in Germany, and most of it can be navigated by houseboat without a licence after a short briefing — which is why families take a boat here rather than a car. The Müritz is the biggest lake lying wholly in Germany, with a national park on its eastern shore where cranes gather in autumn and sea eagles nest. Between the water are brick Gothic towns, Schwerin’s lake castle and long avenues of old trees.
