Middle Rhine Valley

The Rhine gorge: a castle on every hill, the Loreley and vineyards down to the water.
Between Bingen and Koblenz the Rhine cuts a gorge through the slate hills, and the valley is listed by UNESCO for the forty-odd castles along it — Marksburg never fell, Rheinfels is a ruin to explore. Wine towns such as Rüdesheim and Boppard sit at the water, the Rheinsteig trail runs along the ridges, and the boats stop at the Loreley.
