Wine country with the largest cellars on earth, a cave monastery above the Răut, and almost no other visitors.
Moldova’s vineyards are its case for existence: Mileștii Mici holds the world’s largest bottle collection in 200 km of limestone galleries, and Cricova is nearly as vast, both driven through by car. Above ground, Orheiul Vechi is a monastery cut into a cliff over a river bend, and village life is closer to the 1950s than to Chișinău. Breakaway Transnistria can be added if the paperwork appeals; it is a day trip into a country that does not officially exist.
