Orkney Islands

Green, fertile islands holding some of the best-preserved neolithic sites in Europe, and a sunken war fleet.

Orkney is older than Stonehenge and says so plainly: Skara Brae is a stone village with its furniture still in place, Maeshowe a chambered tomb carved with Viking graffiti, and the Ring of Brodgar stands on an isthmus between two lochs. Scapa Flow below holds the scuttled German fleet of 1919, which makes this one of the great wreck-diving sites in the world. The islands are low and green rather than rugged, and the crossing from Scrabster or John o’ Groats is short.
