Outer Hebrides

A hundred-mile chain of white shell beaches, peat moor and Gaelic, with standing stones above the Atlantic.

The Western Isles run from Lewis in the north to Barra in the south, linked by causeways and short ferries so the whole chain can be driven in a few days. The beaches at Luskentyre and on Berneray are turquoise over white shell sand and usually empty, the Callanish stones predate the pyramids, and Harris tweed is still woven in island sheds. Gaelic is spoken daily, Sunday observance is real on Lewis and Harris, and the weather changes every twenty minutes.
