Red sandstone rocks, castle ruins on every summit and the Wine Route at the forest’s edge.
The Palatinate Forest is one of Germany’s largest woods, and its red sandstone towers around Dahn are a climbing area in their own right. Trifels, where Richard the Lionheart was held, and a dozen other castles crown the hills; along the eastern edge the German Wine Route runs through Neustadt, Deidesheim and Bad Dürkheim, and the forest huts serve Saumagen with the wine.
