Picos de Europa National Park

Limestone walls rising to 2,600 metres barely twenty kilometres from the Atlantic.

The Picos are the steepest thing in Spain and stand astonishingly close to the sea: glacial lakes at Covadonga, the Cares Gorge cut into a cliff face and walked on a ledge, and the Fuente Dé cable car lifting you 750 metres in four minutes. Villages like Sotres and Bulnes still make Cabrales in mountain caves. Weather comes off the Atlantic in hours rather than days, which is why the meadows are green and the rock is often in cloud.
