A Venetian harbour town on a point, the Škocjan and Postojna caves and Lipizzaner horses.
Slovenia’s forty kilometres of coast have a jewel in Piran, a Venetian town of narrow lanes crowded onto a point, with salt pans that still work next door. Inland is the Karst, the limestone plateau that gave its name to every karst on earth: the caves of Postojna and the UNESCO-listed Škocjan canyon underground, Predjama castle built into a cliff, and the stud of Lipica where the Lipizzaners come from.
