Chalk cliffs over the Baltic, seaside resort architecture and a beech forest listed by UNESCO.

Rügen is Germany’s largest island and its chalk cliffs at Jasmund are the ones Caspar David Friedrich painted; the old beech forest above them is part of a UNESCO listing spread across Europe. The resort towns of Binz and Sellin kept their white wooden verandah architecture from the 1880s, and Sellin’s pier is the picture everyone takes. At Prora, a Nazi holiday complex four and a half kilometres long stands along the beach, half derelict and half converted into flats.
