The oldest republic in the world, stacked on a limestone crag above the Romagna plain.
San Marino is a single mountain with a country on it: three towers along the ridge of Monte Titano, medieval lanes that climb between them, and a view that reaches the Adriatic on a clear day. The old town empties in the evening when the day-trippers leave, which is the best time to be there. Most visitors come up from Rimini on the coast, half an hour away, and the duty-free shops along the way are part of the experience whether you want them or not.
