Ottoman bazaar, Austro-Hungarian boulevards and a recent, unavoidable history, in a valley ringed by mountains.
Few cities change character so abruptly street by street: Baščaršija’s coppersmiths and wooden stalls give way to Habsburg facades within a block, and the line where the two meet is marked on the pavement. The siege of the 1990s is present in the Tunnel Museum, in the cemeteries on the hillsides and in the Sarajevo Roses, and the city neither hides it nor is defined by it. Bjelašnica and Jahorina, the 1984 Olympic mountains, are half an hour away, and coffee, ćevapi and burek cost almost nothing.
