The Sauerland is a thousand hills of spruce and beech with reservoirs between them, close enough to the Ruhr for a weekend. Winterberg has one of Germany’s best-known bike parks and the Rothaarsteig trail, the Biggesee is for paddling and sailing, and Attendorn and Arnsberg keep old centres. Warsteiner and Veltins are brewed here.
