Sandstone towers above the Elbe, with a footbridge strung between two of them.
Wind and water cut this sandstone into free-standing towers, ravines and tables, and the Bastei bridge has spanned a gap between two pinnacles since 1851. The Malerweg walks the whole massif in about a week and is named for the Romantic painters who came for exactly this light. Königstein is a fortress on a table mountain that was never taken, and free climbing as a discipline was more or less invented on these rocks, where chalk and metal wedges are banned to this day.
