Shetland Islands

Britain’s northernmost islands: treeless, wind-scoured, closer to Bergen than to Edinburgh, and full of seabirds.

Shetland is a hundred islands of peat, cliff and voe, with no trees to speak of and light that lasts almost all night in June. Sumburgh Head and Noss hold puffins, gannets and skuas in numbers that are hard to credit, Jarlshof stacks four thousand years of settlement in one excavation, and Up Helly Aa burns a galley in the January dark. The Norse inheritance is in the dialect and the place names, and the ferry from Aberdeen takes a night.
