Wales’s mountain heart: Yr Wyddfa, slate villages and narrow-gauge railways, with the sea never far.
Eryri, to give it its Welsh name, is a compact range of glacier-cut valleys and rock that has trained mountaineers for a century — the 1953 Everest team practised on Tryfan. Yr Wyddfa can be walked by six routes or ridden up by rack railway, the slate landscape around Blaenau Ffestiniog is UNESCO-listed and now carries zip lines and underground trampolines, and Portmeirion sits on the estuary being cheerfully un-Welsh. The coast at Harlech and Barmouth is twenty minutes from the summits.
