A green, low-rise capital with a mountain on its doorstep and Roman ruins under the pavement.
Sofia wears its layers openly: Roman Serdica excavated beneath the metro, the gold-domed Alexander Nevsky cathedral, and a mosque, a synagogue and an Orthodox church within a few hundred metres of one another. Vitosha rises straight out of the southern suburbs and can be walked or skied the same day, and Rila Monastery is a day trip south. It is among the cheapest capitals in the EU, with a café and craft-beer culture well out of proportion to its size.
