The home of the walking safari: leopards at night, hippos by the hundred and Thornicroft’s giraffe.
South Luangwa is where the walking safari was invented, and walking with an armed guide is still the best way to meet it. The Luangwa river has some of the densest hippo and crocodile populations in Africa, the park is famous for leopards seen on night drives, and it has its own giraffe subspecies. Mfuwe, at the park gate, has the airstrip and the lodges along the river.
