Paramaribo & the Interior

A Dutch wooden old town where a mosque and a synagogue stand side by side, and rainforest mountains inland.

Paramaribo’s old town of white wooden houses is a UNESCO site, and one of the most mixed cities in the world: a mosque and a synagogue stand next to each other, and Javanese, Hindustani and Maroon food share the markets. Dolphins swim at the mouth of the Suriname river, and two hours inland Brownsberg nature park looks out from a rainforest plateau over the Brokopondo reservoir.
