Medieval defence towers below the glaciers of the Caucasus, and one of Europe’s highest villages.
Svaneti is a high valley of the Greater Caucasus where every family once built a stone defence tower, and hundreds still stand below the glaciers of Ushba and Shkhara. Mestia is the base with its museum of icons, and a four-day trek — or a rough road — leads to Ushguli, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Europe.
