Forty kilometres of beach, dunes, thatched villages and Germany’s smartest island.
Sylt is a long sandbank in the North Sea, reached by car train across the causeway. The west side is forty kilometres of beach and wandering dunes, the east side the calm of the Wadden Sea; Keitum and List keep their thatched Frisian houses, and Westerland is where the promenade and the oysters are. It is expensive, windy and hard to leave.
