A relict spruce that survived the Ice Age, above a turquoise reservoir in a gorge.
Tara is a forested plateau above the Drina, and its emblem is the Serbian spruce, a species that survived the Ice Age here and nowhere else and was only described in 1876. The Drina canyon below is flooded into a green reservoir, with the much-photographed little house on a rock midstream. Viewpoints like Banjska stena look straight down into Bosnia. Bears and chamois live in the forest, and Mokra Gora’s narrow-gauge railway loops its way up the hillside nearby.
