The Rennsteig ridge trail, the Wartburg above Eisenach and Goethe’s Weimar nearby.

The Rennsteig, Germany’s oldest long-distance trail, follows the crest of the Thuringian Forest for 170 kilometres. Luther translated the Bible in the Wartburg above Eisenach, Oberhof is a winter-sports village with summer trails, and Weimar — Goethe’s, Schiller’s and the Bauhaus’s town — is an hour away.
