Asia’s youngest nation: a harbour capital, whales in the strait and the world’s richest reefs off Atauro.
Timor-Leste is one of Asia’s youngest countries and one of its least visited. Dili is a relaxed harbour capital with a giant Christ statue on its headland and a museum of the resistance. Across the strait, where blue whales and dolphins migrate, the island of Atauro has reefs that surveys found to be among the most species-rich on earth, with simple eco-lodges on the beach.
