Deep snow, hot springs and summer festivals, in the Japan the tour buses skip.

Tōhoku is the northern third of Honshu and gets the snow — Zaō’s frost-covered trees are called snow monsters, and Ginzan Onsen is a gorge of wooden inns lit by gas lamps in winter. The summer festivals are among the biggest in Japan: Aomori’s illuminated floats, Sendai’s paper streamers, Akita’s poles of lanterns balanced on foreheads. Matsushima bay is scattered with pine islands, and the Tsunami of 2011 is remembered along a coast that has largely rebuilt.
