Sri Lanka’s East Coast

Calm summer sea while the south-west has its monsoon: whales, a temple on a cliff and quiet bays.
When the monsoon reaches Sri Lanka’s south-west in summer, the east coast has its season. Trincomalee has one of the world’s great natural harbours, the Koneswaram temple on its cliff and whale-watching offshore, Nilaveli and Pigeon Island have the snorkelling, and the shallow bay of Pasikudah stays calm enough to wade out for hundreds of metres.
