The Caribbean’s biggest carnival, the oldest rainforest reserve and a lake of asphalt.
Trinidad is an industrial island that happens to have invented the steelpan, calypso and soca, and its Carnival is the one the rest of the Caribbean measures itself against. Caroni swamp fills at dusk with scarlet ibis coming in to roost. Tobago is the other half and the opposite: the Main Ridge has been a protected forest reserve since 1776, the oldest in the western hemisphere, with reef diving off Speyside. Pitch Lake is a hundred acres of natural asphalt you can walk on.
