Rounded forested summits above the Alsace vineyards, with lakes in the hollows.
The Vosges are old mountains worn smooth: bare rounded tops called ballons, forest below them, and glacial lakes in the corries. The Route des Crêtes runs along the ridge, built as a military road in the First World War, and the front line left its mark — Le Linge still has its trenches. The eastern slope drops straight into the Alsace wine road, so a day can begin on a summit in cloud and end with riesling in a half-timbered village.
