A tidal sea that empties twice a day, with car-free islands along its edge.
The Wadden Sea is the largest unbroken system of intertidal flats in the world, and at low water you can walk out onto the seabed with a guide — wadlopen, which is a sport here. The islands behind it each keep their own character: Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog have no cars to speak of, Terschelling has the dunes and the cranberries, Texel the sheep and the seal sanctuary. Everything runs on the ferry timetable, and the birds arrive in millions on migration.
