York Minster and the Shambles, heather moors and Whitby’s abbey above the sea.

York keeps its medieval walls, the great Gothic Minster and the overhanging timber houses of the Shambles, along with Viking and railway museums. North of it the moors turn purple in August; Helmsley is a market town with a castle ruin and Rievaulx Abbey in the next valley, and Whitby — where Dracula came ashore — has fish and chips below its clifftop abbey.
