Islands, dykes and the storm barrier built after the sea took 1,800 lives.
Zeeland is a delta turned into islands and then joined back together by the Deltaworks, the flood defences begun after the North Sea broke through in 1953. The Oosterscheldekering is the centrepiece: two and a half kilometres of gates that close only when a storm demands it, so the tide still runs and the oyster and mussel beds survive. Between the dykes are wide beaches, Middelburg’s abbey town, and some of the best wind for kiting in the Netherlands.
